Revolution of the Production of Customized Human Immune Cells at the Industrial Level

Pharmacists are adopting the method of using human immune cells to treat major diseases. Previously, animal and plant cells were used for this purpose. However, following animal rights, pharmacists no longer want to experiment on animals. Recently, scientists of Fraunhofer found a way to design human immune cells to treat some diseases. It is one of the most significant discoveries in the pharma industry.

Before this, human immune cells were only produced in laboratories on a low scale, and it was the biggest problem of using human immune cells to make medicines and vaccines. But now, different human immune cells can be prepared on the industrial level to produce a greater quantity of drugs or vaccines. All thanks to Fraunhofer researchers.

After this discovery, the significance of human immune cells in the pharma industry is rapidly increasing, and many new drugs are being prepared. Pharmacists are also working on using these immune cells to treat diseases like Cancer, CAD, and HIV. Moreover, these are also used to test some other drugs.

Production of iPSCs in the Past

In 2006, two scientists from the UK and Japan, Shinya Yamanaka and John Gurdon, found a way to convert skin cells into induced pluripotent stem cells. These cells were then used to treat cancer and some other relevant diseases.

Six years later, they were awarded a Nobel Prize in medicine for this research. However, pharmacists used to treat cancer with human-donating cells or already-used cancer cells. But it was not an effective method, as all human cells are unique in nature.

Journey of Conversion of iPSCs into Designer Immune Cells

Now researchers of Fraunhofer are working on these induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). They have found a way of producing different designer immune cells using the iPSCs on a larger scale. Researchers use a giant snow globe-like device for this process. The iPSCs are mixed in a solution and continuously moving. The scientists mainly focus on the production of the required cell using different procedures.

According to Fraunhofer scientists, they spent more than three years investigating designer immune cells and eventually found the right way to produce these after numerous alterations. It allowed the scientists to learn several new things along the way. So they can be aware of dos and don’ts.

First Test for Designer Immune Cells

Fraunhofer’s scientists mainly tested the macrophage cells. The macrophage cell is one of the human immune cells. Then the designer immune cells were used to check the capability of the macrophage cells. If someone’s macrophage cells are incapable, then the drugs or modified designer cells are given to that person.

Applications of Designer Immune Cells

According to scientists, we can genetically modify cells to find any impurity in medicines and vaccines. Moreover, skin cells can also be used in skin care products to test their effects on human skin, and the manufacturers can improve it accordingly.

Other than that, we can also use immune cells, such as macrophage cells, to check the air quality. So the air quality can be improved for better breathing. However, as we discussed before, its central focus will be to treat cancer and other deadly diseases.

Future of Designer Immune Cells

All pharmaceutical companies are interested in these designer immune cells. Everyone is ready to invest their time and money to find the potential of designer immune cells because it is the future of the pharmaceutical industry. And modern technology is capable of producing more designer immune cells and further developing the pharma industry.
